Woman accused for T-shirt calling for Romani genocide

Varnsdorf, North Bohemia, Sept 5 (CTK) – The Czech police have accused a woman who wore a T-shirt saying “Revive Hitler. Romanies to be gassed” during a march against Romanies held in Varnsdorf on Saturday, a district police spokesman said yesterday.

The woman faces up to three years in prison for approval of genocide.

The police arrested a dozen people during the demonstration. Three other persons are prosecuted over suspected violence against policemen and damaging of property.

Locals in the border area started organising protests in reaction to two violent attacks by Romanies that occurred in August in the nearby towns of Novy Bor and Rumburk. Both cases have been under investigation.

Several hundred people marched through Varnsdorf on Saturday evening. They wanted to get to a Romany lodging house but the police closed all streets leading to the house outside of which a group of Romanies were waiting, saying they are prepared to fight.

The demonstration was organised by the Free Youth far-right group. However, mainly locals took part in the protest.

On the previous day, September 2, an official demonstration against “unadaptable citizens”, or Romanies was held. The police did not let the crowd march through neighbourhoods inhabited by Romanies.

Extremists groups took advantage of the tension between Romanies and the majority population, Police Squad for Uncovering Organised Crime (UOOZ) head Robert Slachta said on Sunday.

The far-right Workers’ Party of Social Justice (DSSS) plans to stage meetings in the area next weekend.
